COMT: why you are a warrior or a worrier
COMT clears dopamine, adrenaline, and used estrogen. A fast version keeps you calm and a little flat. A slow version makes you sharp — until the day gets loud.

COMT is the cleanup crew for your stress chemicals. After dopamine, adrenaline, and noradrenaline do their job, COMT tags them with a methyl group and clears them out. It does the same for used-up estrogen. How fast that crew works is written into your DNA.
The two versions
- Fast COMT (often called the warrior): stress chemicals clear quickly. You stay steady under pressure but may need more stimulation to feel switched on, and motivation can run flat.
- Slow COMT (often called the worrier): dopamine and adrenaline hang around longer. Focus and memory can be excellent on a calm day, and overwhelming on a loud one.
- Most people land in the middle, with one copy of each.
“Neither version is better. They are just tuned for different days.”
Signs of a slow COMT
- Caffeine that used to be fine now feels like too much.
- A racing mind at 2 a.m. after an ordinary day.
- Feeling wired but exhausted at the same time.
- Reacting strongly to methylated supplements — especially high-dose methylfolate or methyl-B12.
- Estrogen symptoms that feel heavier in the second half of the cycle or through perimenopause.
The estrogen connection
The same enzyme that clears adrenaline also helps clear estrogen metabolites. When COMT runs slow, those metabolites linger, which is why COMT shows up in conversations about PMS, breast tenderness, heavy cycles, and the perimenopausal years. It is also why a COMT result rarely stands alone — MTHFR, CYP1A1, and GST results are all part of the same picture.
What tends to help a slow COMT
- Treat caffeine like a dose, not a habit — smaller, earlier, and not on an empty stomach.
- Magnesium, and enough of it. COMT needs magnesium to work.
- Go gentle with methyl donors. Start at the lowest sensible dose and give it two weeks.
- Protect the nervous system on purpose: ten quiet minutes, breathwork, a walk outdoors. Cortisol burns through methyl groups fast.
- Cruciferous vegetables and steady fiber support the estrogen clearance side.
And a fast COMT
- Protein at breakfast, with real tyrosine-rich food, to support dopamine building blocks.
- Structure and novelty help more than stimulants do.
- Watch for the mid-afternoon flat spot rather than fighting it with a third coffee.
Your COMT result explains a temperament, not a diagnosis. Read it next to your methylation chapter — together they explain far more than either does alone.
